Arkadi Monastery

The Arkadi Monastery is 23 kilometers from the town of Rethymno and the first complete fortress was created last Venetian period. The Holy Monastery of Arkadi is a historic monastery in Crete. According to tradition it was founded by Emperor Heraklion and rebuilt around the 5th century by the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius, whose name has on  his honor. Others say that it was founded by a monk named Arcadius and therefore Arkadi Monastery. Ruins of the first monastery currently kept in the northwestern part of the precinct. Built in a small fertile and verdant plateau able strategy NW. slope of Mount Ida over gorge, linking the provinces Rethymnon Mylopotamou and Amari.
